Where can I find a Subversion 1.7 binary?

As described in this previous answer (thanks Fernando!), the “installer” shell script which WANDisco provide is actually just installing a standard APT repository. Although they ask for your details before you can download the script, there seem to be no terms and conditions attached to using their repository without doing so.

The below should add the repository on 12.04 Precise (the repository doesn’t contain a Source directory, which the add-apt-repository command assumes it will, so I have used a slightly different method).

sudo sh -c 'echo "# WANdisco Open Source Repo" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/WANdisco.list' sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://opensource.wandisco.com/ubuntu precise svn18" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/WANdisco.list' wget -q http://opensource.wandisco.com/wandisco-debian.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-get update

To confirm that the new subversion package has been detected, run:

apt-cache show subversion | grep '^Version:'

If the 1.8 package...

What's New in Apache Subversion 1.7 ¶

Apache Subversion 1.7 is a superset of all previous Subversion releases, and is as of the time of its release considered the current "best" release. Any feature or bugfix in 1.0.x through 1.6.x is also in 1.7, but 1.7 contains features and bugfixes not present in any earlier release. The new features will eventually be documented in a 1.7 version of the free Subversion book (svnbook.red-bean.com).

This page describes only major changes. For a complete list of changes, see the 1.7 section of the CHANGES file.

Compatibility Concerns ¶

Older clients and servers interoperate transparently with 1.7 servers and clients. However, some of the new 1.7 features may not be available unless both client and server are the latest version. There are also cases where a new feature will work but will run less efficiently if the client is new and the server old.

There is no need to dump and reload your repositories....

That distribution of Subversion includes Apache and everything you
need to run a Subversion server on Windows -- there is no need to
separately install Apache or anything else.

To find out what is happening with the project and when you can expect the next major release, take a look at our project status page.

We maintain ongoing Release Candidates as well. These contain the latest official release plus latest bugfixes and will eventually become the next official release. They are not built nightly, but on demand from the current release branch, typically once a week if there has been any significant bugfix activity. If you find that a certain bug has been fixed and you do not want to wait until the next release, install one of these. Because they are built from the stable branch they should be completely compatible with the current official release and with other compatible Subversion clients. You would also help us tremendously by installing and testing release candidates. Note that the stable branch accepts bugfixes only, not new features.

Nightly Builds are available too. They are built from the current development head and are for...

As you know, one of the features introduced in IntelliJ IDEA 13 is the long-awaited support for Subversion 1.8. Let’s have a closer look at it.

Unlike its earlier versions, Subversion 1.8 support uses the native command line client instead of SVNKit to run commands. This approach is more flexible and makes the support of upcoming versions much easier.

Now, IntelliJ IDEA offers different integration options for each specific Subversion:

1.6 – SVNKit only 1.7 – SVNKit and command line client 1.8 – Command line client only

If you opt to the command line client, make sure you have its binaries installed on your machine, because they are not bundled with IntelliJ IDEA.

In case the working copy format version is different from the command line client version, you will be prompted to make a conversion.

More details on the Subversion 1.8 support can be found here.

Feel free to report any found bugs to our issue...

"Enterprise-class centralized version control for the masses"

Welcome to subversion.apache.org, the online home of the Apache Subversion™ software project. Subversion is an open source version control system. Founded in 2000 by CollabNet, Inc., the Subversion project and software have seen incredible success over the past decade. Subversion has enjoyed and continues to enjoy widespread adoption in both the open source arena and the corporate world.

Subversion is developed as a project of the Apache Software Foundation, and as such is part of a rich community of developers and users. We're always in need of individuals with a wide range of skills, and we invite you to participate in the development of Apache Subversion. Here's how to get started.

The Apache Subversion project does not officially endorse or maintain any binary packages of the Subversion software. However, volunteers have created binary packages for different distributions and platforms, and as a convenience, we maintain a list of links to them here. If there are any problems with or questions about the different binary packages please send email to the Subversion users mailing list.

Note that binary packages usually come out about a week after the corresponding source release. Please don't post to the mailing lists asking when a binary package for a given platform will be ready. The packagers already know when new source releases come out, and work as fast as they can to make binaries available.

Binaries are typically built from the latest stable release.

Note also that this list does not include distributions of larger collections of software of which Subversion is but one piece. Several vendors offer such things, but we...

If you like our Subversion Client..

We provide a standalone command-line Subversion client for Windows. The installer contains all command line tools (svn, svnadmin, svnsync, svnserve, svnmucc) but no application bindings nor Apache modules. The tools are fully side-by-side compatible with other packages. Ideal for build systems, deploy scripts, et cetera.

I've upgraded system from 13.10 to 14.04 LTS Now I need downgrade from Subversion 1.8 to Subversion 1.7, because formats 1.7 vs 1.8 are different and I can not access to svn repo of my team.

I've failed to compile svn from sources: a lot of dependencies, strange errors.

I can not understand why svn has not been packed into standalone deb package. I'm sure there are a lot of people that need precisely one svn version and do not need forced svn upgrade.

So, my question is: how can I switch to svn 1.7 from 1.8, staying at Ubuntu 14.04?

Update I've installed svn 1.7.9 on ubuntu 14.04 from source. Then I've installed svn 1.7.9 on ubuntu 14.04 as described below via apt-get and source.list manipulations

Both cases resulted with message:

The following repository access (RA) modules are available:

ra_svn : Module for accessing a repository using the svn network protocol. ra_local : Module for accessing a repository on local disk.

You can install Subversion by compiling its source code release directly, or you can install one of the prepackaged binaries if there is one for your operating system. Unless a release has "alpha", "beta", or "rc" in its name, it is tested and considered stable for production use.

When upgrading, just install "on top of" the older release. Subversion 1.x is forward-compatible with any newer 1.y. No repository upgrade is required. As long as client and server both have the same major release number (1), olders clients will work with newer servers and newer clients will work with older servers. The only caveat is that if the client and server minor release numbers don't match (e.g., 1.0 and 1.1), then some of the features of the newer release may not be activated.

There are a number of Subversion vs. Git comparisons around the web and most of them are based on myths rather than facts. The list below is intended to bust some of these myths. Although it doesn't tell which version control system is better, it should help you to understand the actual state of affairs.

1.Git repositories are significantly smaller than equivalent Subversion ones

False. A myth.

The particular delta compression algorithms used in both version control systems differ in many details, but in general Subversion and Git store data in the same way. This results in the fact that Subversion and Git repositories with equivalent data will have approximately the same size. Except for the case of storing a lot of binary files, when Subversion repositories could be significantly smaller than Git ones (because Subversion’s xdelta delta compression algorithm works both...

We've already covered in detail how Subversion stores and retrieves various versions of files and directories in its repository. Whole chapters have been devoted to this most fundamental piece of functionality provided by the tool. And if the versioning support stopped there, Subversion would still be complete from a version control perspective.

But it doesn't stop there.

In addition to versioning your directories and files, Subversion provides interfaces for adding, modifying, and removing versioned metadata on each of your versioned directories and files. We refer to this metadata as properties, and they can be thought of as two-column tables that map property names to arbitrary values attached to each item in your working copy. Generally speaking, the names and values of the properties can be whatever you want them to be, with the constraint that the names must contain only ASCII characters. And the best part about these...
