Question: What's the Difference Between a Chrome Web App and an Extension?

The Chrome Web browser and Chrome OS introduce a new way to think about browsing the Web. Traditional browsers have extensions and themes, but what is this new Web app idea for Chrome? What's the difference between that and an extension?

Answer: Web apps are basically websites. They run within Chrome's browser using things like javascript and HTML, and they may not even require any downloads. Sometimes they may need to install a small component on your local machine, but that will only make a difference when you're using that particular Web app. An example Web app would be Google Maps. It runs within the browser and doesn't require you to download anything, but it has its own user interface.

An extension, on the other hand, affects something global on your browser. For instance, an extension may add the ability to save items to...

Just for clarification: At chromium.org you can find a detailed blog article about the relationship between Chrome, Chromium and Google from 2008

Chromium is the name we have given to the open source project and the browser source code that we released and maintain at www.chromium.org. One can compile this source code to get a fully working browser. Google takes this source code, and adds on the Google name and logo, an auto-updater system called GoogleUpdate, and RLZ

Since 2008 Google has added more stuff which isn't included into Chromium, mostly to avoid copyright issues. Some popular things are: MP3 and AAC support, a Flash player plugin and a native PDF viewer

But what is this RLZ?

RLZ is a library that is built into Google Chrome. It's a tracking ID which contains non-identifying information about where Chrome was downloaded from and the installation date. Everytime you do a Google search from the Google Chrome address bar, an RLZ parameter is...

Chromium is the open-source project that forms the basis for Google Chrome. Because it’s completely open source, Chromium is available in many Linux distributions’ software repositories for easier installation.

The Chromium web browser is also available for other platforms. You could run it on Windows or Mac — in theory. Similarly, “Chromium OS” is the name of the open-source project that forms the basis of Google’s Chrome OS.

Getting Chromium or Chrome

On Linux, Chromium can often be installed directly from your Linux distribution’s software repositories. On Ubuntu Linux, for example, it can be installed by opening the Ubuntu Software Center, searching for Chromium, and clicking Install. It will be updated with security updates from your Linux MicroStation software repositories.

On Windows and Mac, actually using Chromium is tougher. Official Chromium builds are available, but they’re bleeding-edge-only and won’t automatically update. The updater is a...

First of all, Chromium is owned by the community. Chrome, is owned by Google, so Google can do anything with it.

Chromium is Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS). That means if you have enough programming skills, you can see and modify its source code, and, eventually, make it a Closed source (=CS) software (like the Torch Browser on Windows).

Google has already taken and modified the OS code with 3rd party CS, with its own code, and released the CS software named Chrome. Some of the code added include PDF reader, Flash player (which will update, but the Linux one will not update any more) and tracking (so Google and the NSA will know everything).

On Ubuntu, Chrome release = Chromium release, because the Ubuntu team took care about that (as soon as a Chrome update is released, an Ubuntu's Chromium update is released, based by the same source code, but, of course, without Google's code).

Hope that this explained everything.

The choice is yours:...
