Last upgrade crashes network manager (no internet connection, no applet)

This question already has an answer here:

I am running 14.04 LTS on a Dell XPS 13 9343. Today I did a routine update through Software Updater and restarted when it prompted me. When I logged back in I had no internet connection and no icon in the menu bar to edit connections. When I open "Network" within the main Settings menu, I get the message:

The system network services are not compatible with this version

When I open the "Network Connections" dialog, all options are greyed out. I have attempted to connect to Ethernet as well as WiFi to no avail.

Please help, I am freaking out. This is the machine I use for my job and doing a fresh install of Ubuntu would be a massive hassle as I have all kinds of specialized software packages installed.

I should also mention that I tried reinstalling network-manager. I even removed and purged it, then reinstalled from the package provided on the Ubuntu website. That didn't change anything. I also purged and...

Ekimia, Looks like the fix is in place, I had downloaded the following packages manually from, trusty-updates:

- libnl-3-200_3.2.21-1ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb
- libnl-genl-3-200_3.2.21-1ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb
- libnl-route-3-200_3.2.21-1ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb

Has to install it using sudo dpkg -i, as Ubuntu software center was not allowing it due to the dependency relation between these packages. Anyhow after installing these packages and doing a
sudo service network-manager restart

enabled my netwrok manager, previously with the broken packages, it was resulting in netwrok-manager crashing, if I tried to restart the service, but after these packages were installed the netwrok-manager worked normally.

One more thing, though technically a apt-get upgrade and reboot should work, it won't work as without the network-manager there is no easy way to connect to the internet, so for most users they'll have to download the packages manually...

[Triage Notes]

This regression is caused by a libnl proposed update tracked in bug 1511735. It has not been released as an update, only proposed as an update for early testing. If you volunteered to test proposed updates, then thank you. Your care and attention will stop this regression from hitting ordinary users, and we appreciate your contribution to Ubuntu.

If you are not aware that you volunteered to test proposed updates, then please be aware that your system is configured to do so. In this case, you probably should turn this off. I'd appreciate if someone could explain how to do this in the comments.

* NetworkManager depends on libnl (libnl-3-200 libnl-genl-3-200
libnl-route-3-200) and when libnl is updated to proposed
3.2.21-1ubuntu1 NM segfaults due to libnl exposing a bug in NM
validation packets.

This affects the 0.98 release of NetworkManager and has already
been fixed in newer releases.

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 as a dual boot with Windows 7. My wifi inexplicably stopped working today and I have no idea why. It works fine in Windows. I really like Ubuntu but I'm afraid I'm not very computer savvy. Can anyone offer some suggestions or advice. I'll provide all the answers you need to some this problem. Thank you.

Other Tips. I have a MacBook Air and I recently tried to install Ubuntu on my external HD. I booted Ubuntu from a flash drive and everything had gone fine. I turned off my computer and when I turned it on again I got a message of error and a "grub rescue" line to enter some code. I rebooted holding the "option" key and I selected the Mac partition and everything is fine with my system, but every time I start my system and I don't hold the "option" key, I get the same error and the grub rescue message. I just want things to go back to normal, as they were before I installed Ubuntu on my external HD (which, btw, presented a message that said there was...

I shall gladly tell you the pros of wicd - I used to use networkmanager exclusively in Ubuntu as well as in Arch, until I installed Arch on a USB drive. Networkmanager does NOT load until you have X running, while wicd can be started as a daemon. This means that if you are in text mode without X started, wpa_supplicant or wicd is the only way to go. wicd_curses, as reported above, is amazing. Networkmanager has a text based app called cnetworkmanager, which did not work for me at all. In Slackware and Gentoo as well until you installed X, wicd was the only way to go for me. Moreover, even if networkmanager was running, it will be killed along with you internet connection if you kill X - so if you log out of, say Gnome and log into blackbox or ratpoison, you need to have set nm-applet to run in a tray, else you will be out of your internet connection. With wicd, since it does not depend on X, no such issues.
I was told that with Ubuntu Natty, networkmanager can apparently start...

[Bug 1580174] Re: Add an activity timeout setting when plugged in

A user made this request and reading it now I misstated it somewhat. The desktop has separate settings for on AC and on battery, and in windowed mode we are acting as a desktop so it makes sense to be consistent. But this should likely be dependent on whether it is plugged in or not. Would plugged in and in windowed mode make sense? The use case is the tablet acting as my desktop, plugged in on my desk in windowed mode with a mouse and keyboard. I personally make the inactivity timer quite long when plugged in as there is no battery concern. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. This is caused by a regression introduced with a fix for libnl3 bug #1511735.
Resulting network-manager crash has been reported in network-manager bug #1539513 or network-manager bug #1539634

Downgrade libnl packages and wait for an upgrade of network-manager package

Step 1

Try to downgrade libnl with apt-get as in @Max answer:

sudo apt-get install libnl-3-200=3.2.21-1 libnl-route-3-200=3.2.21-1 libnl-genl-3-200=3.2.21-1

Step 2

If Step 1 fails,
because the packages aren't anymore in your cache and obviously cannot be downloaded by package manager, you need to downgrade libnl packages manually (download + install):

Download and copy them to your system
[ from booting a live distrib/rescue cd or from another computer + usb stick ]
Download links for amd64: libnl libnl-genl libnl-route
Download links for i386: libnl libnl-genl libnl-route

Back to your system, where you saved these .deb files, install them...

This question already has an answer here:

My networking was working fine yesterday. I shut down, went to bed, and when I booted up this morning it won't even talk to the router; network-manager crashes.

I was wondering how to upgrade packages when it can't connect to the internet. My Ubuntu 15.10 laptop (this machine) connects to the internet through the same router just fine. Some of the error report:

Title NetworkManager crashed with SIGSEGV in nm_netlink_monitor_attach() Unreportable reason You have some obsolete package versions installed. Please upgrade the following packages and check if the problem still occurs: network-manager, libnm-glib-vpn1, libnm-glib4, libnm-util2,...

I would not recommend downgrading packages or installing new ones by hand - this will inevitably lead to version issues later on. The best fix to this issue is simply to upgrade the network-manager package.

The first thing to do is to connect manually to the internet; while the network-manager is dead this does not mean you can not connect.

1. Open a terminal and edit the interfaces file:

sudo pico /etc/network/interfaces

There add the following lines, they indicate the eth0 interface should no longer be managed:

allow-hotplug eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp

2. With this the connection can be started manually:

sudo ifup eth0

Note that there will be no notification in the panel - this is a manual connection. Give it a try with ping or firing up your internet browser.

3. Now update the apt meta-data:

sudo apt-get update

And upgrade the network-manager package:

sudo apt-get upgrade network-manager

4. Make...

Yesterday I upgraded my Ubuntu by SSH but before I finished it, I restarted my computer. I know that was not very smart. Anyway now I don't have internet connection, the WiFi or Ethernet is not recognized.

When I try on the latest version installed, the mice didn't work. When I try with previous version and go in gnome-network manager it's said:

The system network service is not compatible with this version

Another thing is when I comeback to the remote computer and look at the SSH terminal the process have stopped at:
