Installing and testing CUDA in Ubuntu 14.04

if it has an internet connection, and you are going to cut and paste commands without modifying them to your own situation, then do as "lukeiamyourfather" advised. Simply type it the same exact commands he posted.

If not, then you really need to adapt those parts of the commands that purtain to your machine.

For example I posted a command that I told you that as an example, if the usb drive showed up as /dev/sdc, then to use that as part of your command. You imperpretted and took that literally. My second attemot at explaining that was to have you post the results of what your machine saw as attached devices and filesystem so that either we could adapt commands to what your machine saw as that USB device, or for you to be able to use that to adapt your commands. YOu again typed the commands without adapting them to what your machine sees.

So if this needs to be "literal": I have patience and can still work with that. Please post the results of the blkid and fdisk...

installer for Ubuntu 14.04.

Before installing CUDA toolkit, you need to first install nvidia proprietery driver in Ubuntu. You can install this using

Additional Drivers

in Ubuntu.

Then you need to exit the ubuntu graphics session and go to CLI. For this, press ctrl+alt+f1 and run the following command to stop lightdm display manager.

sudo service lightdm stop

Once the lightdm is stopped, you can proceed to next steps.

If your system does not include necessary dependencies, you might encounter following error when installing CUDA toolkit.

Once dependencies are installed, go to where the CUDA toolkit is downloaded, and run the following command to start the installation.

sudo chmod a+x cuda_6.5.14_linux_64.run sudo ./cuda_6.5.14_linux_64.run

If you get an error saying,

Unsupported compiler 4.*.*. Use --override to override this check

I had a similar issue when trying to install Caffe on my system. The steps below worked for me, but it has at least one known issue (documented below).

I'm not sure what precisely caused this problem, but it surely has something to do with the Nvidia Driver and Cuda Toolkit installation and is not caused by Caffe.

After completing the steps below, I've been able to successfully install Caffe on my system with the following tutorials and guides:

Update

Recently, I had the exact same problem trying to make Cuda 7.5 work on Ubuntu 14.04; this approach also solved that problem. Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4700MQ (4x 2.40 GHz with Hyperthreading) GPU: NVidia GT 940M RAM: 8 GB HDD: 52.7 GB (of which 6.7 GB used after installation)

Source: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2246526

!! Known Issues !!

After the system has been suspended (or hibernated, not confirmed), all applications using the Nvidia Driver and Cuda 6.5 Toolkit will freeze. When...

Today I'll show you how to compile and install OpenCV with support for Nvidia CUDA technology which will allow you to use GPU to speed up image processing.
I assume that you already have CUDA toolkit installed. If not there is a very good tutorial prepared by Facebook AI Research (FAIR). Just look at the Install CUDA section in FAIR's instruction.
