Picasa on Debian Squeeze 64bit
I recently found that Picasa for Linux** no longer exists in the Google/Linux repository, so I had a Google around and found a few guides on how to install it with Wine. There were a few different guides, but I got errors as my machine is 64bit and didn’t have all the necessary Wine/Windows libs etc..

**Just to be clear, Picasa was always a Windows package, but the Google/Linux download came prepackaged with Wine.

Wine and Winetricks
First you need to install Wine, and then download Winetricks

Wine

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine

Winetricks

wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks
sudo mv winetricks /usr/local/bin/
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/winetricks

**NOTE on Debian Wheezy (Testing)
Artur posted in the comments that you may need to install libwine-cms as mscms.dll is needed.

sudo apt-get install libwine-cms

Last week, Google came out with a new version of Picasa – version 3.9. There are some major differences between this version and its predecessor, version 3.8. Here’s the official list:

Social Tagging: name tag people in your Google+ circles and notify them via G+. 24 New photo editing effects, including my top picks: Adding frames with Border, Polaroid, Vignette/Matte or Museum Matte, adding special effects like Pencil Sketch, Invert Colors, Posterize, Focal Zoom Side by side editing: compare two pictures side-by-side, or compare different edits on the same picture. Updated RAW support for pictures from newer cameras. Support for WebP files. On the Tools > Experimental menu, we’ve added support for migrating your database to another local drive. Picasa is a software developed by Google, Inc. whose function is to allow the user view and organize the pictures in his/her PC.

Picasa searches for all the images in your HD and show them in the eye-catching and intuitive interface. Without any doubt, the presentation is one of the high points of this applications.

It includes some advanced features really easy to use. Picasa allows you to burn your pictures in a CD and it creates slideshows on fullscreen.

You can configure the printing options as you desire and allows you to extract the photos from your digital camera. Now, and thanks to Picasa you will have the album you desired and you will be able to see your photos anytime you...

Although Picasa 3.9 is not certified for operation on the Windows 8.1 operating system, you can install and use it without any problems. The default photo viewer in Windows 8 is the Modern UI Photos app, but you can configure your computer's operating system to use the Picasa Photo Viewer by changing the default programs settings. Finding the default programs settings is not difficult, but the procedure is different from Windows 7.

Open the Picasa Web page and click the Download Picasa button. Although Windows 8.1 is not listed among the supported operating systems, you can install a fully functional copy of Picasa on it.

Save the file on your hard drive and then double-click it to launch the setup wizard. Click I Agree to accept the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy. You can read the two documents in your Web browser by clicking the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy...

Google’s Picasa is photo editing software, but its abilities are not limited to just this. Picasa provides you all the features that we are used to in a photo-editing program, and all at no cost. With Picasa you can resize your images, crop them, remove red eye, add effects, retouch, enhance colors, and much more.
In addition to all this, Picasa also gives you an excellent way of organizing your existing images, by using facial recognition. Here’s how it works: the software goes through all of your photos, determines which photos include the same person and groups those photos together. It goes without saying that the software is not always correct, so gives you the option of confirming its selection. Once this is complete, locating photos of a specific person just by searching them by name is incredibly simple. The program gives even more organizing options: you can tag photos and even geotag them, meaning you can add information about where the photo was taken.

I deleted most of my photos form the Google plus web interface. My idea was to re-upload them under Googles 2048 x 2048 limit (for free storage of photos). But Picasa thinks that all my files have already been uploaded. So when I hit "batch upload" it says "no files to upload." How to I reset the uploaded flags on all the files?

Obviously I could re-import all the pictures but I would lose all my face data that it took many hours to create.

I am using Crossover wine implementation on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit.

I have tried:
1) Creating a new container with a new instance of Picasa thinking that I could just upload everything and then switch back to my main instance, which has all my face data etc. Problem was I couldn't log in to Google Plus account. The we browsing aspect wouldn't work correctly. I read that this is common problem.

2) Using Google Plus autobackup. Same problem with not being able to log in. Something to do with the version...

Now in Picasa 3.9 you can edit multiple image at once. This may come when you create list articles and adjust all the images in the same format without affecting a couple of pixels in the images. So, it’s just an example maybe you got to edit multiple images at once for another purpose, or whatever it.

OK, this will be a bit of a long answer. There are two applications from Google that go by the nickname of Picasa. The first is Picasa Web Albums, which gives you access to an on-line site where you can upload your photos, do some editing on them, and share them with friends. This requires a Google user account, which you say you have.

There is also a free program from Google called Picasa that is installed on your PC and enables you to organize and edit your pictures on the PC. It will also upload your pictures to Picasa Web Albums IF you tell if to and if you have an account on Picasa Web Albums (PWA). A Google account is not required to use Picasa unless you want this upload feature.

You can also email photos to Picasa Web Albums - see link below.

Now as to how you actually get the photos to your PWA. I think - think - that the phone wants you to email the photos to your PWA. Alternatively, you could connect the photos to your PC and copy them off the phone onto...

Picasa 3.0 is a very comprehensive program for image management and graphic editing, which can enhance and retouch your photos, while maintaining an orderly collection. This program, developed by the software giant Google, has become extremely fast and easy to use, even for those who do not have special editing skills.

Picasa 3.0 is responsible for creating an internal library, and you can browse through your collection, previewing all photos contained within each folder, watching presentations, or even composing files into CDs or exporting them to a movie file for you to share it with everyone. During publishing, Picasa 3.0 lets you perform cuts, straighten your images, remove red-eye effect, adjust brightness, contrast and color, retouch imperfections, insert text and even add some interesting effects, such as shadows, color filters, and anything you wish.

An interesting feature for those who take screenshots permanently is that while you keep the program opened, it...

A few days ago, Google announced the latest incarnation of their online photo storage and sharing service, now called simply, Google Photos.

Before I tell you the good and the bad of this announcement, let me give you a little bit of history. In 2006, Google offered an online photo storage and sharing service called Picasa Web Albums (PWA.) It worked in tandem with the Picasa software on computers and it was quite popular. In 2012 Google started the Google+ (Plus) social network and they totally reprogrammed the photo storage and sharing service to integrate it with the social network. They called it Google+ Photos. Picasa Web Albums continued to exist. If you used either of these services, your uploaded photos were stored in the same place, as part of your Google account. You could work with your photos using either Picasa Web Albums or Google+ Photos. These were simply 2 interfaces to the same set of online photos, but since Google+ photos was newer, it was the default....

Question: I need to transfer my complete Picasa library from my desk top computer to my new laptop computer. Suggestions?

Great question! I know a lot of people are getting new computers these days, and Picasa can make it very easy to transfer all your pictures if you do it right. What you do is make a complete backup of your pictures on your desk top computer, then restore that backup to your new laptop. Use Picasa’s backup tool to do this. You will need a USB drive to do this. A thumb drive will do if it has enough capacity, otherwise you’ll need an external hard drive. Picasa will inform you how much capacity you need.

Step one: Using Picasa’s Backup Tool

While you’re viewing your complete Picasa Library on your old computer, click on the Tools menu, then ‘Backup Pictures’. At the bottom of your screen, you will see some backup options in two steps:

Create a Set or Use an Existing One Choose Folders and Albums to Backup

For #1, on the left, choose...
