How to open a PDF file from terminal?

OS, ker|rel, machine: Linux,, i686 Distribution : Fedora release 12 (Constantine)
To find the utilities that you have installed that might deal with pdf files, use:

man -k pdf
To see what you have installed and what is available in the repositories:

yum list '*pdf*'
To see a detailed description of the items from the list:

yum info '*pdf*'
To install something, say xpdf:

(become root) yum install xpdf
which then makes available:

xpdf - Portable Document Format (PDF) file viewer for X (version 3.02)
which can be used as, for example:

xpdf /usr/share/doc/bzip2-devel-1.0.5/manual.pdf
More information is found in man yum and other man pages.

Best wishes ... cheers,...

There are many ways to view PDF documents in a Linux environment. Depending on your needs, we currently recommend LibreOffice if you need to edit a PDF, and Evince for simple PDF viewing.

LibreOffice Writer, which is part of the open source LibreOffice suite, does a great job opening, viewing, editing, and writing PDF documents.

Installing LibreOffice

To install LibreOffice, use the instructions below which correspond to your specific operating system:

Debian and Ubuntu

Debian and Ubuntu both use the APT package management system. In your terminal, run the following command to install the LibreOffice software package:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install libreoffice

In CentOS first, download the LibreOffice package from appropriate for your system architecture. For instance, in this example we have downloaded LibreOffice_5.1.4_Linux_x86-64_rpm.tar.gz,...

I have a pdf containing the following code:

#!/bin/sh echo echo “**** Pulling changes into Dev [Hub’s post-update hook]” echo case “ $1 ” in

If I copy and then paste that code on my terminal, after doing pico myhookname I get this:

#!/bin/sh echo echo ?^?^?**** Pulling changes into Dev [Hub?^?^?s post-update hook]?^?^? echo case ?^?^? $1 ?^?^? in

How can we properly format the .pdf file so that, when we copy paste, we get the proper code on or file ?

Here is an image of how the pdf looks like:

If the problem relies not on PDF but on the original program that have created this (inDesign in this case), does anyone know a way to insert code, so that when we copy paste, it just works ?

ps - Those as hooks btw, and it's very dummy to, each time I wish to start a development, I have to write on hand all necessary hooks....

How to open encrypted PDF files

The PDF specification includes support for AES-128 and AES-256 bit encryption. Compliant PDF viewers are able to decrypt .pdf files that have been encrypted. Strong encryption makes the PDF format a practical way to protected important documetns and files. The PDF Postman add-in for Microsoft Outlook leverages PDF encryption and lets you easily convert your important email messages into an encrypted PDF document that virtually any anyone can decrypt on any device or platform.

The process of opening opening an encrypted PDF file is easy. The recipient only needs to click on the file. If a PDF viewer is present on the device it will prompt the recipient for a password. If the recipient does not have a .pdf viewer, they can easily obtain one from their favorite app store, usually for free.

To experience the process yourself using the PDF viewer present on your device right now, download this sample encrypted PDF file that...

PDF is an acronym for Portable Document Format. It is a proprietary file format developed by Adobe Systems for representing two-dimensional documents in a device independent and resolution independent format. You can open pdf file using graphical as well as command line tools (i.e. without GUI). Linux supports following PDF viewer under X window:

Gnome pdf viewer (gpdf) KDE pdf viewer (kpdf) xpdf Official Adobe acrobat reader

Graphic pdf viewer under Linux/FreeBSD

If you are using Gnome desktop…

Open a shell prompt and type the command:
$ gpdf file.pdf
$ evince file.pdf

If you are using KDE desktop…

Open a shell prompt and type the command:
$ kpdf file.pdf

You can also click on K icon > Select Graphics > Select PDF viewer

Console pdf viewer under Linux/FreeBSD

Console pdf viewer

As far as I know there is no console based PDF viewer exists. But you can use the following trick to...

Michael Meyer's solution didn't quite work for me. Specifically, a path with spaces fails with an IllegalArgumentException rather than an IOException.

Here's what works for me:

if (Desktop.isDesktopSupported()) { try { File theUMFile = new File(usersManualPath); Desktop.getDesktop().open(theUMFile); } catch (FileNotFoundException fnf){ okDialog(msg_fnf); theConcours.GetLogger().log(Level.SEVERE, null, fnf); theConcours.GetLogger().info(msg_fnf); } catch (IllegalArgumentException fnf) { okDialog(msg_fnf); theConcours.GetLogger().log(Level.SEVERE, null, fnf); theConcours.GetLogger().info(msg_fnf); } catch (IOException ex) { okDialog(msg_cno); theConcours.GetLogger().log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); theConcours.GetLogger().info(msg_cno); } ...

This is how i solve this issue.
The answer of Jonathan Amend on this post helped me a lot.
The example below is simplified.

For more details, the above source code is able to download a file using a JQuery Ajax request (GET, POST, PUT etc). It, also, helps to upload parameters as JSON and to change the content type to application/json (my default).

The html source:

1 Submit

A simple form with two input text, one select and a button element.

The javascript page source:

// File Download on form submition. $(document).on("ready", function(){ $("form button").on("click", function (event) { event.stopPropagation(); // Do not propagate the event. // Create an object that will manage to download the file. new AjaxDownloadFile({ url: "url that returns a file", data: JSON.stringify($("form").serializeObject()) }); return false; // Do not submit the form. }); });

Understands relative file paths.

The start of your Terminal command line always displays the current directory you are located in. By default, this is your Home directory, named after your username. A relative file path begins with

or with no special characters, and describes the file's location in relation to your current directory.

If you're having trouble figuring this out, follow these steps:

Enter pwd to check your current directory. The file you are trying to open must be within this directory, not at a higher level. Find your current directory in Finder. Open a series of folder until you reach the file you'd like to open. Type in the names of the folders you opened in order, separated by / symbols, then end with the file name. For example, open Documents/Writing/Novel/ch3.pdf. (You may start with ./ in front of Documents for the same...

I tried all of the above solutions and none of them worked for me, I'm running javascript on top of mvc 3, and razor, adobe 11 installed as add-on on ie, Chrome and Firefox. Here is what I did in order to get it to work on all above browsers.

Made PDF controller, called from javascript like this

in razor code for main view:

var URL_OPEN_REPORT_PDF = "@Url.Content("~/Report/OpenPDF/")";

var sURL = URL_OPEN_REPORT_PDF; sURL = AddURLParameter(sURL, "ReportArchive", moControl.treeOrganization.getUserData(sItemUI, "reportarchive"));;

controller ReportController.cs:

[Authorize] [HttpGet] public ActionResult OpenPDF(string ReportArchive) { PDFResult oPdfResult = new PDFResult(); ReportArchive oReportArchive; var serializer = new JavaScriptSerializer(); oReportArchive = serializer.Deserialize(ReportArchive); string FilePath = Server.MapPath(string.Format("~/Content/Reports/{0}",...

Today was a good day, not because I did this and failed. But because I work with a guy who codes and was able to help fix the issues others and myself are having.

I am working on OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5 (iMac 27-inch, Late 2013) The Illustrator I am using is Adobe Illustrator CC 2015.3.1 Release (20.1.0).

I installed this script according to the instructions above and when I open Illustrator I cannot open a PDF period.. it is greyed out and when I browse for the file it is blank when I click it. Thus failing.

The fix to this…. in the top right corner of my iMac I have a little magnify glass to search..

Search> terminal >Return Key *Click and drag the PDF file you want to open into this terminal. You will see the files or example my file is /User/Jennifer/Documents/FIleName.pdf

I will Copy (Do not include ” in Copy only for text to copy) “/Documents/FileName.PDF” and paste this in the blank box when opening your file in front of this file...
