Thanks to scanning software, it is by now fairly easy to send documents you want to keep via the internet. Scanning lecture books and other (scientific) work to read it on your computer is also a great invention of the past decades. However, what if the scanning process is interrupted in the middle and only half the job is sent? Or what if you scanned your ID card and now have both sides in different documents?

Likewise, some websites require you to upload information like a job application directly using the PDF format. Yet, what if they only allow to upload one file? And you have individual documents saved for your cover letter, resume, scanned certificates, etc.?

For these and other purposes it comes in handy when you can merge several PDF files into one. With our free online tool, you can merge two or more PDFs easily!

Welcome to the Slackware Documentation Project

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format invented by Adobe. PDF is useful to present documents independent of hardware, operating system and application software. Each PDF file has a fixed layout, including page size, fonts, graphics and other information. It is also possible to encrypt a PDF file for security, or create a digital signature for authentication.

Work in Progress!!!

PDF documents are created from traditional text documents via a printer driver, or as with LaTeX, created directly from source-code. One important consequence is that one cannot convert a PDF-document “back” into it's original format such as a Microsoft Word document.

This article describes how you can merge several PDF documents into a single PDF document. For example, this is useful if you have several pages from a scanner in PDF format and want to put these files into one file. There are...

Install the full version of Adobe Acrobat.

Most computers have Adobe Reader or Acrobat Reader, but Acrobat was created specifically for editing and managing PDFs. As of 2015, the only Adobe product that can merge PDFs is the paid program Adobe Acrobat DC.

However, many computers come with the program pre-installed. If not, you'll need to buy it or move on to other methods. You can use the Standard or Pro version.

If you are not sure if you already have Acrobat DC, right-click (PC) or Ctrl-click (Mac) on the one of your PDF's and hover over "Open With." All PDF compatible programs will appear. While Adobe now charges for Acrobat, you can download a 30-day trial that will let you merge PDFs immediately if you are in a...

Ghostscript is a package (available by default in Ubuntu) that enables you to view or print PostScript and PDF files to other formats, or to convert those files to other formats.
To use Ghostscript to combine PDF files, type something like the following:

gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=finished.pdf file1.pdf file2.pdf

Here is a brief explanation of the command:

gs starts the Ghostscript program. -dBATCH once Ghostscript processes the PDF files, it should exit. If you don't include this option, Ghostscript will just keep running. -dNOPAUSE forces Ghostscript to process each page without pausing for user interaction. -q stops Ghostscript from displaying messages while it works -sDEVICE=pdfwrite tells Ghostscript to use its built-in PDF writer to process the files. -sOutputFile=finished.pdf tells Ghostscript to save the combined PDF file with the specified name.

Your input files don't even need to be PDF files. You can...

Split PDF File

Almost everyone knows PDF files and their excellent features. PDF documents are most preferred for transferring data on the web, therefore their file sizes can be a matter of concern. These files can range from a single page document of few KBs to multi-sheet booklets of many MBs. Sometimes, you do not need the whole file and at times small files can be too clumsy to manage.

Kernel for PDF divide and Merge is an effective software to resolve any kind of size issue with existing Portable Document Format documents. An outstanding, standalone, and tremendously advanced software that helps to break large documents into small and individual ones. In addition, it can efficiently merge small PDF files into a handsome sized single document. The size of the original file does not matter; it is capable of splitting documents having any size in no time.

Here is a realistic situation. You have a 20MB large PDF file containing several...

I've had similar problem in my software. We've wanted to merge several PDF files into one PDF file and submit it to an outer service. We've been using the FPDI solution as shown in Christa's solution.

However, the input PDF's we've been using could be in version higher than 1.7. We've decided to evaluate the FPDI commercial add-on. However, it turned out that some of the documents scanned by our office copier were having malformed indexes, which crashed the commercial FPDI add-on. So we've decided to use Ghostscript solution as in Chauhan's answer.

But then we got some strange metadata in the output PDF properties.

Finally we've decided to join two solutions to get PDF's merged and downgraded by Ghostscript, but the metadata is set by FPDI. We don't know yet how it would work with some advanced formatted pdfs, but for scans we use it works just fine. Here's our class excerpt:

class MergedPDF extends \FPDI { private $documentsPaths = array(); public...

Recently I had to create an assembly component using C# to merge multiple PDF files into one file. The specification was pretty straight forward:
1) Merge two of more PDF document into a single output PDF File.
2) Used on an ASP.NET Page

After a few minutes of GOOG, I came up to this “ITextSharp”

iText# (iTextSharp) is a port of the iText open source java library written entirely in C# for the .NET platform. iText# is a library that allows you to generate PDF files on the fly. It is implemented as an assembly.

It must be noted that the assembly is coded and compiled using the .NET Framework 1.1. You might want to migrate to the version 2.0 or 3.5 of the .NET Framework.

With a some more research on PDF merging. I was able to create a class that will make use of the ITextSharp assembly and perform as the merge pdf operation as needed.

Here is the code:

To use the MergeEx class:
1) Initialize the class
2) Set the...

Try the good ghostscript:

gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=merged.pdf mine1.pdf mine2.pdf

or even this way for an improved version for low resolution PDFs (thanks to Adriano for pointing this out):

gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress -sOutputFile=merged.pdf mine1.pdf mine2.pdf

In both cases the ouput resolution is much higher and better than this way using convert:

convert -density 300x300 -quality 100 mine1.pdf mine2.pdf merged.pdf

In this way you wouldn't need to install anything else, just work with what you already have installed in your system (at least both come by default in my rhel).

Hope this helps,

UPDATE: first of all thanks for all your nice comments!! just a tip that may work for you guys, after googling, I found a superb trick to shrink the size of PDFs, I reduced with it one PDF of 300 MB to just 15 MB with an acceptable resolution! and all of this with the good ghostscript, here...
