How to install Ubuntu on VirtualBox?

1

In this Video tutorial I used Ubuntu 11.10, but the same applies to, any previous or future version of Ubuntu. Actually, you can install any Linux distribution this way. VirtualBox allows you to run an entire operating system inside another operating system. Please be aware that you should have a minimum of 512 MB of RAM. 1 GB of RAM or more is recommended.

Installation Process

The first thing you have to do is Download Ubuntu Download VirtualBox.

Installation

1. After you launch VirtualBox from the Windows Start menu.

2. Click on New to create a new virtual machine.

3. When the New Virtual Machine Wizard appears, click Next.

Note: You can call the machine whatever you want. If you’re installing Ubuntu, it makes sense to call it Ubuntu, I guess. You should also specify that the operating system is Linux.

4. VirtualBox will try to guess how much of your memory (or RAM) to allocate for the virtual machine. If you have 1 GB or less of...

Virtualbox is a very simple & powerful virtualization tool that is used to create & manage Virtual Machines [VMs]. Most of my friends & colleagues ask me what the best way to learn Linux is. I always suggest them to get Virtualbox installed on their systems either running Windows or Mac & download the ISO image of a Linux flavor & install it using Virtualbox. We do not need to change any hardware for that, no affect on current operating system & a very huge RAM or CPU upgrade won’t be required as well because with very light specifications, Virtualbox is able to manage multiple VMs.

Installation on Windows

It’s installation on Windows is pretty simple, we need to download the executable file & run it, would be an easy install.

Installation on Ubuntu

Oracle VirtualBox is a cross-platform virtualization application. It installs on your existing Intel or AMD-based computers, whether they are running Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris operating systems. VirtualBox can create and run a "guest" operating system (virtual machine) in a window of the host operating system. The virtual machine provides a self-contained environment in which to experiment with new software without risking damaging changes to the host operating system.

We will give an instruction with step-by-step screenshots to show how to install VirtualBox with an example of installing Ubuntu OS as a guest machine. We also explain how to share files between the host and guest operating systems.

Downloads

Note the instruction here is based on the latest version of the VirtualBox. If you have already installed an earlier version of VirtualBox, your experience may be different. It...

Installing VirtualBox On Ubuntu

Version 1.0
Author: Falko Timme

This tutorial shows how you can install InnoTek's VirtualBox on a Ubuntu desktop. With VirtualBox you can create and run guest operating systems ("virtual machines") such as Linux and Windows under a host operating system. There are two ways of installing VirtualBox: from precompiled binaries that are available for some distributions and come under the PUEL license, and from the sources that are released under the GPL. This article will show both ways.

Currently VirtualBox supports only 32bit host and guest operating systems.

This document comes without warranty of any kind! I want to say that this is not the only way of setting up such a system. There are many ways of achieving this goal but this is the way I take. I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!

Comparison to Dual-Boot
Many websites (including the one you're reading) have tutorials on setting up dual-boots between Windows and Ubuntu. A dual-boot allows you, at boot time, to decide which operating system you want to use. Installing Ubuntu on a virtual machine inside of Windows has a lot advantages over a dual-boot (but also a few disadvantages).
