How do I install VMware Player?

Since VMware Player is not provided by the repositories, you have to instead download it here at the VMware website.

To install VMware Player, download the latest version for your architecture (newer versions are at the top of that list. That is, if you're running the 32-bit version of Ubuntu, get the 32-bit version, and if you're running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, get the 64-bit version. If you're not sure which version of Ubuntu you're running, press Ctrl+Alt+T to open a Terminal window, then type in uname -m and press enter. If it says x86_64, you're running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. If it says i686, you're running the 32-bit version of Ubuntu.

After the download completes, go to the folder to which you downloaded it in the Terminal. You can do this with the cd command. For example, if you put it in your Downloads folder, run:

cd ~/Downloads

(In the Terminal, the ~ character at the beginning of a file path represents your home folder.)

Now make...

While it's not officially supported, I was able to get VMware Workstation installed and running on Kubuntu 10.4. It requires patching a couple of VMware kernel modules.

Since it was a fresh install, I first had to get VMware installed so I could patch the files. Unfortunately, the VMware installer is good about cleaning up after itself when it fails to install. I followed the steps outlined in (changing the VMware bundle file name as appropriate). You may not need the killall step, but I did it.

Then, I followed the technique in the page at to get the modules built and installed.

I did run into a problem with mouse input in a Windows XP guest after I got it running, but I think that problem is solved:

I can't install VMwarePlayer 4.0.3 on Ubuntu 12.04 64Bit. For Version 4.0.2, I found a script that I have to run and after that I could install 4.0.2. Is there an similar solution for Version 4.0.3?

I ran into the same problem, and I was able to make the same patch work by editing a version number in the script which applies it.

WARNING: I don't actually know what I'm talking about when it comes to VMware patching, I just made an educated guess that seems to work.

Whether you want to try this yourself depends on how risk-averse you are. But hey, your VMware Player install is already broken, right? I figured worst-case scenario I could uninstall and reinstall version 4.0.2.

I based this on the instructions I found here: vmware player compile issue. To boil it down to the simplest steps:

Download this tarball: Extract the tarball in your home directory...

The result of virtualization is a virtual machine – an isolated software container with its own operating system and application. When you have multiple VMs on a single computer, you can run several operating systems and applications. All you need is a virtual machine. And VMware Player lets you do this. I installed UBUNTU with Vmware Player on my Windows 7 system. For some reason Vmware Player cannot get the Vmware Tools files from internet, possibly a connection problem due to firewall limitations. I want to get the Vmware Tools files in compressed format if there is any, and then manually install it. Two questions: 1- Is there a link where i can download Vmware Tools files? 2- How do i install it manually? I'm using Vmware Player on a Windows 7 system. And if i download it, which folder should i unzip the contents? As you know, UBUNTU runs on a virtual disk, and to copy files on this disk i guess i have to use Vmware Tools. Over the recent weeks I’ve been using VMWare Player to play, experiment and develop in various operating systems & various versions of Ubuntu.

I had been an avid VirtualBox user but I’ve become increasingly disenchanted with VirtualBox unstable nature. I’ve had numerous X-windows crashes & failures to suspend to resume. Every new version it seems brings new problems.

So what other virtualisation software could I use on my Ubuntu 14.04 host? My basic requirements were straightforward:

3D Graphics acceleration – I dont want my guest to behave like a slug ability to share folders with my host easily – I do my developing in Guests but I share data files stored on my Host. easy to move my mouse cursor from Guest to Host without having to use key combinations to release the cursor. must be fairly simple to setup & configure it must be free – free as in beer.

3D Graphics acceleration is the killer feature here for me – without having to use a full bare metal solution,...

I’ve been having issues with my Ubuntu / VirtualBox set up. My original virtual box had almost run out of space, which I assumed is why it was running so slowly. So I decided to create a new one with twice the space – 16GB. I also installed the latest version of Ubuntu 12.04. Guest additions wouldn’t install properly. It ran hideously slowly, to the point of being unusable. A bit of late night Googling revealed that this is a known and unsolved issue. Not ideal.

In a previous life I’ve used VMware for Windows Guests and Hosts so I decided to give it a whirl with Ubuntu. I’m so glad I did. I can’t tell you how long it actually took to get Ubuntu running because as I set the installer running inside a VM and went to bed. Definitely less than two hours though, as that’s how long my laptop will wait before going to sleep.

So anyway, here’s how I got Ubuntu 12.04 running on Windows 7 (64bit) using VMware player.

VMware Workstation Player (formerly Player Pro) is available for free download and installation for personal use. When downloaded, the installation package comes with the file name ‘VMware-Player-12.1.0-3272444.x86_64.bundle‘ or something similar depending upon the latest version available. The bundle is not a simple debian (.deb) package and so nothing happens when you double-click or right-click on it.

To install the VMware Workstation Player, you need to use the sh command.

[notification type=”alert-info” close=”false” ]sh command is short form for shell and is a interpreter command that executes a set of instructions written in a file within the same folder.[/notification]

Let’s get started.

Launch terminal

Use ‘cd’ command and probably ‘ls’ command to propogate to the folder where the VMware bundle file is downloaded. Typically, it should be the ‘Downloads’ folder in your user profile.

After propagating into the folder, use the sudo sh...

I tried to install VMware from your tutorial in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. However, I encountered several problems.

Firstly, the link from where it can be downloaded takes me only to a 32-bit version for windows. I eventually downloaded version 5.0.4 for 32-bit Linux.

On installing the following message was 32 times displayed in the terminal:

( Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: “murrine”,

It finally ended with:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module “canberra-gtk-module”: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

However, the VMware installer suggested it was successfully installed.

After starting VMware Kernel Module Updater, I got the images as attached.

It suggested the Virtual Network Devices could not be started, as well as Unable to start services. Unfortunately I can’t read the log file.

Do you have any...

Using virtual machines of VMware Player in Windows 10 has many advantages:
For example, some old softwares can only be used in the old system, but does not work properly or are not compatible in the Windows 10 new system, in these cases users can use old softwares on the virtual machines of old systems in Windows 10.
Another example is that some old hardwares' drivers can not be compatible with Windows 10 new system, also can use virtual machines of old systems in Windows 10 to load the drivers for old hardwares. Yes, anyway users can use virtual machines of VMware Player or Hyper-V to solve the issues that the latest drivers for old peripherals in Windows 10 would no longer have been provided by manufacturers, - these old peripherals should include printers, scanners, etc., but exclude video cards, network adapters cards, and so on.

Here is an example of the actual demand:
Epson WF-3540 printer and copier works, but cannot access the scanner at...
