How do I install the Firefox Developer Edition?

1
Currently IDM does not support FireFox Developer Edition (ex. Aurura) and FireFox Nightly (alpha) versions.

If you deliberately use developer edition (you are a developer), you should know how to turn off the extension compatibility settings in FireFox (about:config). In most cases our latest version of extension should work correctly with developer edition and even with Nightly (alpha) version of FireFox, but it's possible that in some future versions of developer edition or Nightly (alpha) some functions of our extension may not work, or even rare crashes may be possible. Please don't ask us to fix compatibility problems urgently, we will add support for new versions of FireFox only when they move from development to beta stage.

If you are not a developer, probably you should not use developer edition of FireFox. We would advise you to use beta version of FireFox in this...

I installed Firefox Nightly Developer Edition so I could contribute to some of their open source projects.

I’d like to change back to the original. I’ve uninstalled Firefox using the following commands:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

then

ppa-purge ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next

then

sudo apt-get autoremove

then

sudo apt-get install firefox

But every time I go to install Firefox, either via the terminal or the Ubuntu Software Center, it installs the Developer Edition.

Does anyone know how to install the traditional Firefox? In a perfect world, I’d like to have both so I could still contribute and not need to worry about the bugs when I’m at work.

There are several methods of installing a non-default version of Firefox, that are covered by my tutorial Installing Other Versions, which has detailed explanations and method comparisons. So I will post here only the relevant information regarding Firefox 4. Please do not use multiple methods. Pick one and stick with it or revert the changes before trying a different one. I recommend the manual installation method, since depending on the PPA you choose, you will also update Firefox 3.6 and other Mozilla products.

Since it is still a Beta release and there are some radical changes in this version, is recommended that you install it side-by-side with the default version and use a different user profile, in order to avoid data loss.

Method #1 - Manual Download & Installation

First you need to download it form Mozilla [pick one only]:

The easiest way to install Firefox 4 downloaded from Mozilla is to use my extension FoxTester. It allows you to install any...

I have a windows 7 system that I do not have tied to the internet and I would like to install firefox onto it because some applications that I am starting to use wants to have a browser on it. The systems do not 'like' windows IE and like either Chrome or Firefox. So I would like to get the whole package of Firefox installed, not a loader that is a loader.

Thanks Frank

This guide is intended for those who have made the decision to swap to Firefox. If you are still deciding then you should first read part one of this article which deals with the pros and cons of changing.

1. Download the product

You can download the latest version of Firefox for free from here:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/Firefox/

The current version is V3.6 and the Windows installation file is 7.7MB

2. Uninstall any old versions

If you have any previous versions of Firefox, then uninstall them before you install the new version. Don't worry about losing your settings and extensions, they will be saved and transferred to the new version. Technically there is no need need to uninstall older versions as Firefox will write over old versions and retain your settings. However based on feedback from my subscribers there appears to be fewer problems if you uninstall first.

There is no need to uninstall Internet Explorer. In fact,...
