How do I get the Skype status icon back? (on panel/tray) [duplicate]

I installed Skype 4.0 following this guide. However my little Skype icon in the unity status bar (in the top right corner with clock, volume, etc.) is gone. How do I get it back?

maybe you need to whitelist skype to the notification area (i'm not sure if skype includes an appindicator)

The easy way to make it is installing dconf-tools

sudo apt-get install dconf-tools

or Using Software Center

Then press alt+f2 and enter dconf-editor to see a program like this:

Navigate to desktop-->unity-->panel and add the apps that you like to whitelist to the end of the list (in your case you must add 'Skype') separate by comas. You can instead write all to whitelist all apps to use the notification area.

You will need to log out and log in again yo apply the changes.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista, a lot of things of have gone much more smoothly. For instance, I don’t have to deal with Vista’s spotty disk management utility, which didn’t help me at all when I wanted to shrink volumes that had at least 100GB of free, unused space. Another great thing about upgrading is that my dual-boot configuration with Ubuntu 10.10 now doesn’t lead to a kernel panic like it used to do on a daily basis with Vista. I was in fact, so ready to remove Ubuntu using Varun’s guide How To Safely Uninstall Ubuntu From A Windows Dual-Boot PC which had saved me a few times, though I’m sure the updated article for non-geeks The Non-Geek's Guide To Safely Uninstall Ubuntu From A Dual-Booting Machine will come in handy.

Though I could go on about many features that turn out very useful in Windows 7, all of which you can see listed and...

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill

Welcome to Ask Me Fast!

There are several reasons why this may have happened.

Even if you remove the app from your cell phone, a copy is available in iTunes as a backup. Just select the application for installation and sync your device with iTunes to put the app back on your iPhone. Once the app is back on your phone, the App Store will check to see if updates are available.

1. Reset your home screen icon layout. Navigate to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Home Screen Layout. The iTunes icon should reappear.

2. Access iTunes through Spotlight search. Swipe to the right on your home screen until the Search iPhone dialog box appears. Enter the search term iTunes with the keyboard. The purple iTunes app icon should appear first in the search results. You can run the app by touching the search result.

3. iTunes may be invisible to search if it`s restricted. To remove restrictions on iTunes and bring back the app icon, navigate to Settings ->...

Install dconf-tools / sudo apt-get install dconf-tools.

Then run the conf editor by typing:

at the command line.

There under Desktop > Unity > Panel

change the line that says:

['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Mumble', 'Wine', 'hp-systray', 'scp-dbus-service']`

into this here:

['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Mumble', 'Wine', 'hp-systray', 'scp-dbus-service', 'Skype']

You can change it to ['all'] which allows all tray applications to show there icons in the indicator bar (Ah-Duh!). As usual changes will take effect only after reboot or restarting unity by Alt+F2ing

Microsoft removed support for the old developer API at the end of 2013. A status-checking URL is still in place:[username].txt

However, it requires the Skype user to actively enable status checking from the web (it seems to be disabled by default). It can be enabled in Preferences -> Privacy by ticking Show my status on the web as of Skype version 6.19. If it is not enabled, the user will be shown as Offline.

They're now promoting URIs instead, an API aimed at web developers integrating call functions on their sites. It seems highly restricted, completely missing status-checking and a lot of other functions from the old API:...

Earlier we looked at how to get rid of Skype's Taskbar button. I was contacted by some Winaero readers asking me how to remove or hide the Skype notification area (system tray) icon, because they didn't find it useful. Well, this is even simpler. Just follow the instructions below.

RECOMMENDED: Click here to fix Windows errors and optimize system performance

Right click the Date/Time area on your Taskbar and choose "Customize notification icons". Uncheck the "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" checkbox in the Notification Area Icons window if you have checked it. Now glance at the notification area (referred to sometimes as the system tray). You will see an icon with an upwards pointing arrow. Drag and drop the Skype icon from the notification area on to the icon with the up arrow. The Skype icon will disappear from the tray area and will appear in the little pane above it. Microsoft calls this the notification overflow section.

That's it ! This...

A common and annoying problem with Windows 7’s “Pin to Taskbar” feature, is when an application accidentally gets pinned multiple times. You might have run into this issue, resulting in a taskbar that looks something like this :

In this screenshot, there are two yellow VMWare icons. The program was launched using the icon on the left, but when it opens, it creates a second duplicate icon on the taskbar. Annoying!

How to remove duplicated pinned taskbar icons :

Taskbar icons get duplicated when a shortcut is pinned to the taskbar, rather than the program itself. The solution is to find and remove the extra shortcut. The most straightforward way to do this is simply to right click and “Unpin” all the icons for the program in question, launch the program via the Start Menu, and then right click the running program on the taskbar to re-pin it.

Sometimes we’ve run into situations where this doesn’t resolve the problem. There’s usually a hidden...

Check to make sure the data from your old account still exists on your computer. Even if you’re unable to get into the Skype account with all of your old contacts, you may still have the data for that account on your computer. If you do, you can actually get a program to read the database tables and help you find the account names of your old friends.

Search for the Skype location. This works for Skype for Windows Desktop or Skype on Mac OSX. Search Windows for: %appdata%. If you’re on OSX, the default path will be: ~/Library/Preferences/Skype/

Search through the folders available and find Skype. In the Skype folder, you should see folders named after all the accounts that have ever logged into Skype on your computer.

Double-click the account that you want to harvest contacts from. There will be a folder for each account that has signed into Skype. Find your account folder and open it.

A question from one of our readers: “After I first installed and then uninstalled Windows XP Service Pack 3, I noticed I had an extra Add or Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel. Both the icons are functional, but one of them shows a generic icon. How do I remove the duplicate icon?”

Windows XP Service Pack 3 issues an updated version of the appwiz.cpl file (5.1.2600.5512), while Service Pack 2 has 5.1.2600.2180. It is possible that Windows XP Service Pack 3 did not cleanup the older version of the appwiz.cpl from the system and ended up in multiple copies of the file, with different names.

When you open Control Panel, Windows loads any file with the .cpl extension present in the System32 folder, and from other locations defined by third-party applications, if any. If an existing .cpl file is copied to a new filename and has the .cpl extension, Control Panel will read both .cpl extensions and display duplicate icons and labels.

Last month, Microsoft introduced "the next generation of Skype." The highlight features were Snapchat-like stories, a revamped user interface, and support for "add-ins" that extend the app's functionality. But the update wasn't popular with everyone, and Microsoft has implemented a few changes in response to feedback.

One of the most jarring changes with the new mobile app was the removal of the status display for contacts. You couldn't see who was online or not, which was a huge issue for some users. This has now been reversed. Native sharing capabilities have also returned, so you can send content from chats directly to another installed app. There are also a few new features, like more themes and a tweaked user interface for conversations.

In the blog post, Microsoft also mentioned some of the features that have already been rolled out, like multi-tasking while in a call and deleting contacts/conversations. You can download Skype from the Play Store below,...

I just installed a new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Skype is my favorite app, so i installed it first. But, something happen after i log in to my Skype account. Usually, when I close the application, skype tray icon is still active. But, in this new Ubuntu version, there is no Skype tray icon. When i open another Skype windows from Launcher, there is a warning that tell me the SKype application is already running. What the?. Okay, i do a quick googling and find this article :

To fix the missing Skype tray icon in your Ubuntu (i am using Ubuntu 14.04 63 Bit) you have to install Skype tray / appindicator manually because it is not installed automatically. Open your terminal and type this command :

$ sudo apt-get install sni-qt:i386

Voilla, wait a second, your Skype tray icon will show immediately.

The Skype tray icon might disappear after you log in, but it should show up after a few...
