How do I deal with “unauthenticated sources” errors in the Software Center?

1
That error is caused by having a software repository, but not the digital signing keys for it. The keys are used to verify the integrity of packages, and that they really come from correct source. (Confusingly, you get the warning message regardless of if the packages you currently install come from that source or not, as long as there is any repository configured but missing the keys.)

Assuming you have added some third-party repository recently, the easiest way to fix the warnings is to go check that repository's web page, find the security keys, and add them to your system.

If you have added more than one third-party repository lately, or can't remember when the warning messages started appearing, you could open Software Center, then go to Edit->Software Sources, and compare the information on Authentication-tab with the repositories on the Other Software-tab to find out which repository is missing it's...

It happens quite often that we encounter errors while trying to run an update in Ubuntu. There are several type of errors and in this post we will see how to solve some of the most common errors encountered during update of packages in Ubuntu.

Sometimes running the updates in the Update Manger results in the following error:

Could not initialize the package information.
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the ‘update-manager’ package and include the following error message:
‘E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-amd64_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.’

A similar error occurs while running the apt-get update command in terminal:

Reading package lists… Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header

Failed "update" to linux mint broke software sources

location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 8, 2010
Hi, When karmic was just out I wanted to try Linux Mint 8 Helena before it was released. So I followed a guide online how to update using debs from the linux mint page. Well.. I only came half-way before something broke and I cancelled the installation - I now also realize that I don't want Linux Mint. So.. Everything works fine except software sources! I first thought it wasn't a big deal because I could just update the sources manually until Lucid - but trying to install wine repos was a no go since it uses the new format: ppaxxxxxxxx which only works using software sources and not directly in sources.list. Actually if someone could just tell me the karmic repo for wine I will probably be fine until Lucid since I imagine this might not be easy to fix: Code: sudo software-properties-gtk Results in an exception: Code: Traceback (most recent call last): File...

This is a common problem with Launchpad PPAs. Common enough that I've copied these commands to use when I reinstall or add new Launchpad PPAs.

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys

Then,

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys YOURKEYNUMBERHERE

Substitute YOURKEYNUMBERHERE with the problem keys, like this:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys B725097B3ACC3965

And

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 40976EAF437D05B5

The first line is almost the same, minus the keys. It might even be optional, I honestly don't know. All I am sure of is that this method always fixes the problem immediately.

If anyone finds the original answer that I copied these from let me know and I'll link to it and give them the attribution.

**EDIT It's almost certainly karthik87's answer here or here I got this from. This can probably be closed as a...

First possbile solution

Open dash -> Software Sources

Make sure every checkbox from this tab is checked (all of them, also the sources one), also the "Download from" is set to Main server.

Then do:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install codeblocks

Second, if the first does not work - You can try adding and installing it from the ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pasgui/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install codeblocks

If it did not work, you can follow official page guide for installing under ubuntu:

http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?title=Installing_Code::Blocks_nightly_build_on_Ubuntu

Install the compiler. sudo apt-get install build-essential Install the debugger. sudo apt-get install gdb

You'll need to install wxWidgets to use Codeblocks. Revisions from 4051 and after use wxWidgets 2.8.4. If you want to install them, make sure you have your universe and multiverse repositories enabled and install the...

Thanks for a quick reply! It gets stranger by the minute. I'd initiated Software Updater, but it just found "Ubuntu base" updates and successfully installed them. No mention of Unity Tweak tool. See, before that I didn't initiate the update. It'd started by itself. So... I don't know.

GregoryNov 1 '15 at 13:55 @Gregory if software update runs by it self its not strange, it runs after every specific time, you can change it in Software and Updates program

edward torvaldsNov 1 '15 at 14:15 The "strange" part wasn't about the fact that the Updater ran by itself. The "strange" thing to me was the fact that now all of a sudden Unity Tweak Tool doesn't even ask to be updated at all!

GregoryNov 1 '15 at 15:11 @Gregory open Software and Updates program and in tab called Ubuntu Software check first 4 options and then run sudo apt-get...
