How can I remove duplicate icons for “launched” java programs in the launcher?

1

I figured out a way to eliminate duplicate app icons from LaunchPad!

Here's how to do it:

1. Put both (duplicate) icons side by side. You don't have to do this, but it makes it easier to see.
2. Press and hold the Option key. The icons will wiggle.
3. Click on one of the two icons.

One of two things will happen
A. The app will open (if this happens, close the app and try the other icon)
B. You will see a transparent Question Mark (?) on the icon

4. If you see the Question Mark, release the Option key.
5. Press and hold Option again. You'll see a small X at the top left corner of the icon.
6. Click that X and the icon is gone!!

Don't ask me how I found it or why it works. This only works for getting rid of duplicate icons, it won't remove the "original" icon.

Someone else please try this and see if it works for you!

Hi,

I'm having trouble removing icons from GNOME's launcher.

Tried to get used to UNITY, but no luck with it. I want to go back using GNOME (2/fallback session).

I would like to have quick launch buttons to run apps - so decided to place them in launcher (top bar), either on left or right side.

The problem arrives when I want to remove them (or some of them). When placing them in Trash, as this is the only way I've found to removing them (trying to at least) it shows a dialog message:

"cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete it immediately?"
"the file .... cannot be moved to trash"

So I click on "delete", but still cant place it in trash.

"unable to trash file: permission denied"

Even tried to look in terminal under:
"home/my_username/.config/gnome-panel/launchers/"

but nothing there to delete ...

What's going on?
How to remove those app icons?

Thank...

Hello. I have a problem...

I can't launch any modpacks I install from the technic launcher. I get a crash log with some different messages. I tried looking for help on here and other posts and the internet but unfortunately there is nothing I found that has helped with this.

Note: I found that it could be that I have an old integrated video card and cpu (i3-2350m Intel Integrated 3000) that is interfering with Windows 10 or isn't compatible with this version of windows/does not have any current windows 10 drivers. I can't downgrade to windows 7 or 8 and can't find any drivers for windows 10 so that is out of the question. I would like to try and resolve this. Down below is the log and the error I get when starting any modpack. I do have the newest Java, I have tried to reinstall both launcher and modpack and Java. No luck. Please help! I found that "Pixel format not accelerated" is the main issue. Thank you!

A question from one of our readers: “After I first installed and then uninstalled Windows XP Service Pack 3, I noticed I had an extra Add or Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel. Both the icons are functional, but one of them shows a generic icon. How do I remove the duplicate icon?”

Windows XP Service Pack 3 issues an updated version of the appwiz.cpl file (5.1.2600.5512), while Service Pack 2 has 5.1.2600.2180. It is possible that Windows XP Service Pack 3 did not cleanup the older version of the appwiz.cpl from the system and ended up in multiple copies of the file, with different names.

When you open Control Panel, Windows loads any file with the .cpl extension present in the System32 folder, and from other locations defined by third-party applications, if any. If an existing .cpl file is copied to a new filename and has the .cpl extension, Control Panel will read both .cpl extensions and display duplicate icons and labels.

What is Java Web Start and how is it launched?

The Java Web Start software allows you to download and run Java applications from the web. The Java Web Start software: Provides an easy, one-click activation of applications Guarantees that you are always running the latest version of the application Eliminates complicated installation or upgrade procedures

Getting Java Web Start Software

Java Web Start is included in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) since release of Java 5.0. This means that when you install Java, you get Java Web Start installed automatically. Creating a Java application launch configuration

When you choose Run >Run As >Java Application to launch your class, you are running your class using a generic Java Application launch configuration that derives most of the launch parameters from your Java project and your workbench preferences. In some cases, you will want to override the derived parameters or specify additional arguments.

You do this by creating your own Java Application launch configuration.

Select Run > Run Configurations... or Run > Debug Configurations... from the workbench menu bar. This opens a dialog that lets you create, modify, and delete launch configurations of different types. Select Java Application in the left hand list of launch configuration types, and press the New button in the toolbar. This will create a new launch configuration for a Java application. The tabs on the right hand side allow you control specific...

The following segment works on windows/mac & linux and has been in use for
over 2 years in our office

Fairly easily, basically I use it for deploying updates.
I have a class called "bootloader" that contains the following, the most
important thin is that your "bootloader" class MUST NOT link into any of
your other libraries. (if it does then the JVM goes on a class hunt trying to
resolve all other classes & preload them)

That allows you to use the bootloader to auto update any other files , other
than "bootloader"

OurJarClassPathArray, holds that paths of any jars you may need (libraries,
DO NOT HARDCODE, or use imports)

loadThisClass , holds the class you want to run

final Method mainMethod;
final Class toRun;

ClassLoader loader = new URLClassLoader(OurJarClassPathArray);
toRun = loader.loadClass(loadThisClass);
mainMethod = findMain(toRun, thisargs);

if ((mainMethod != null)) {

This question already has an answer here:

Answers:

Android (“vanilla” android without custom launchers and touch interfaces) does not allow changing of the application icon, because it is sealed in the .apk tightly once the program is compiled. There is no way to change it to a ‘drawable’ programmatically using standard APIs. You may achieve your goal by using a widget instead of an icon. Widgets are customisable. Please read this :http://www.cnet.com/8301-19736_1-10278814-251.html and this http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/appwidgets/index.html.
Also look here: https://github.com/jgilfelt/android-viewbadger. It can help you.

As for badge numbers. As I said before – there is no standard way for doing this. But we all know that Android is an open operating system and we can do everything we want with it, so the only way to add a badge number – is either to use some 3-rd party apps or custom launchers, or front-end touch interfaces: Samsung TouchWiz...

Where ever possible, I use portable programs rather than full install programs for many reasons. The most important advantage for me is the ability to keep these programs sync'd off computer to an external drive or online storage enabling the ability to quickly recover all files, settings and data if and when you re-stage or re-image your system. Simply re-image and then mirror the portable folders back to the new image and you are back in business. If you use online real-time sync such as with SugarSync, it will automatically update your portable folders after you reimage and you can also keep these folders sync'd across all of your devices which is very useful (no more packing around a USB stick to update all of your devices.)

I also utilize a Toolbar on my Taskbar to quickly access or manage these folders and launch the programs (no external program launcher required.)

First create a single folder that contains all of your portable programs. I named the root folder...
