I am having a hard time finding out how to install programs in Ubuntu in the right location. If I use Ubuntu Software Center to install a program that gets installed in its right place, but when I download a program manually in this case PhpStorm it went to the Downloads folder and when I ran the command

/home/shairyar/Downloads/PhpStorm-139.732/bin/phpstorm.sh

I assumed it would get installed in the directory where it is supposed to go.

After I ran the command phpstorm kicked off, I did the work I needed to do, and before shutting off the computer I thought of cleaning the Downloads folder. After deleting the phpstorm folder there I could no longer use the phpstorm shortcut I created.

So after restoring the deleted files, how do I move phpstorm to its right location? In future how do I make sure applications are installed to the right places?

How can I set up PyCharm to launch from the Launcher?

I have installed PyCharm on my brand new Ubuntu 13.10 laptop.

To launch PyCharm, I find I must navigate to the directory that pycharm lives in, and execute it from there as such:

cd home/matt/software/pycharm/bin sh pycharm.sh

I hope this isn't asking too much, but I would like to be able to click on an icon in the Launcher to launch this application.

I tried right-clicking on the PyCharm icon in the Launcher when the app is running and selecting "Lock To Launcher" but this doesn't work (after pinning, when I try to run the software this way, the icon throbs in a very awkward manner a few times and does nothing).

A small app called Alacart was rumoured to be useful, but I have no idea how it works, and it appears useless. I'm not sure why the authors teased us with a "Help" button if there are no help files written for us to view.

I have installed ubuntu (11.04).

I installed phpstorm which is simply an archive for you to extract and shove in your /opt directory.

To run it you would use /opt/PhpStorm-103.243/bin/PhpStorm.sh

In unity I had created a launcher on my desktop.

Now I have installed gnome-3(gnome-shell),

And I have nothing in my desktop.

So how do I run phpstorm quickly? Can I get it to show up in "applications"?

I'm not familiar with Gnome3, but with an older Gnome, you can right-click on the application menu, and click on Edit Menus - that'll allow you to modify the menu tree. Select the submenu you want your launcher to appear in, then click New Item and point it at the path to your shell script.

In the Look at the PhpStorm IDE Interface tutorial, we've seen what projects are and why PhpStorm uses them. In this tutorial, we'll see how we can create a new project or open an existing project and what the different options are.

The Welcome screen

After launching PhpStorm for the very first time (or when there is no open project), we will see the Welcome screen. We can bring it up by closing the active project using the File | Close Project menu.
The Welcome screen lets us:

Create or open a projectCheck out a project from version control (VCS)Configure the IDE settingsView documentation

Icon

In this tutorial, we will be using the Welcome screen to create and open projects. All actions can be invoked from an open project in the IDE as well. Explore the File and VCS menu and familiarize yourself with the available options.

We can create a new project from scratch, by clicking the Create New Project button. We will...

Hey

I have found a few people asking the same question on the Ubuntu forums, but the solutions don't seem to work for Mint MATE.

I am trying to create a usual application launcher icon for use in the Programs menu or Panel area for PHPStorm, a web development IDE.

PHPStorm has this functionality built in - http://askubuntu.com/questions/37401#answer-108794. Once I completed this action, I saw the launcher in the Programs Menu, but when clicked I just get a grey empty window open with the title 'Start Failed' in the Panel. A look at Properties shows the command used - along the lines of:

/home/daviestar/PHPStorm/PhpStorm-133.982/bin/phpstorm.sh %f

I have tried every variation of this command I can think of, but always the same result - empty grey window. All the commands I tried have been tested and work in the terminal directly. I also tried a command like this:

mate-terminal -e '~/PHPStorm/PhpStorm-133.982/bin/phpstorm.sh'

Thanks in...

The recent upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin left me somewhat hanging when it comes to creating launchers on the desktop, and also in the Unity Launcher (also called quicklaunch in some places) for Zend Studio and PHPStorm. In Gnome prior to Unity in Ubuntu it was easy to right click the desktop and select Create Launcher to create icons on the desktop to launch applications or scripts, but in 12.04 that options is gone. So here is how I solved some of the issues.

I will cover adding Eclipse to the launcher, adding Zend Studio to the launcher, and PHPStorm to the launcher.

Method 1 (easiest)

For Netbeans and Eclipse based editors like Zend Studio or Aptana it is not too bad. I created a {name}.desktop files for each one and put it in the /home/{username}/.local/share/applications/ directory. Here is how I created a zendstudio.desktop file:

Note: If you want this option to be available for all users you can alternatively create the file in the...

If you have a program you use regularly on Linux desktop, you may want to create a "desktop shortcut", so you can launch the program by simply clicking on the shortcut. While most GUI programs automatically create their desktop shortcut during installation, GUI programs built from their source or terminal applications may require you to set up associated shortcuts manually.

In this tutorial, I will describe how to create a desktop shortcut or launcher on various Linux desktops.

A desktop shortcut is represented by a corresponding .desktop file which contains meta information of a given app (e.g., name of the app, launch command, location of icon file, etc.). Desktop shortcut files are placed in /usr/share/applications or ~/.local/share/applications. The former directory stores desktop shortcuts that are available for every user, while the latter folder contains shortcuts created for a particular user only.

Create a Desktop Shortcut From the Command...
