Conveniently schedule a command to run later?

1

I want to schedule jobs with at, but I'm not sure what happens if the computer is suspended at the specified time: Will the command be executed as soon as the computer wakes up again (like with anacron) or will it not be executed at all (like with cron)?

If you specify a job to absolutely run at a specific time and date in the past, the job will run as soon as possible.

That's what the manpage says about that, however it doesn't quite match my case: I don't want to specify a job to run in the past, I want to run it in the future and ask how at will treat it if the computer is sleeping then.

This is not a duplicate of Run at command when computer is sleeping because this question asks whether at will wake up the computer to execute the command, neither is it a duplicate of How to prevent atd from running past jobs? because this is about how to prevent at from executing those “old” jobs (with a very good answer...

Running programs on remote computers is a common administrative task—useful, for example, in installing software updates. Windows 2000 and later include the Task Scheduler service, which lets you flexibly schedule programs to run on a local or remote computer. Task Scheduler lets you schedule tasks through an easy-to-use GUI, in contrast to the old Windows NT scheduler service, which required you to run the AT command at the command line.

Nevertheless, it's still sometimes useful to schedule jobs from the command line. The AT command is still available for backward compatibility, although its flexibility is limited because, by default, jobs scheduled with the AT command run under the context of the System account, which for security reasons doesn't have network access. This limitation can be a problem when you need to schedule a program that resides on a different computer.

Task Scheduler is useful in such cases, but Win2K doesn't include a built-in way to...

Mac OS X contains the handy at command for scheduling commands to run at a later time. at is used to schedule the commands, and the atrun utility is used to execute the jobs. However, by default the atrun utility isn’t enabled, any jobs scheduled via at will never run, with no particular warning. The reason given in theman page for atrun is to “prevent disk access every 10 minutes”, which would be detrimental to laptop battery life and the computer going to sleep.

To enable atrun, execute the following

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.atrun.plist

Once this is done, you may now use the at command. For example, to schedule a command to run at 11am today, simply type:

[Mac-Book-Pro]$ at 11:30 am today

Then enter the desired command(s) and use Ctrl-D (end of file) to end input

touch diditrun pwd > output.txt job 13 at Sun Dec 20 11:30:00 2009

The example commands above will simply create a 0 length file (diditrun) and output the...

This chapter discusses various ways to specify report requests. The following topics are covered:

Report request methods Duplicate job detection Using a mapping file to simplify run requests Specifying URL run requests Scheduling reports requests to run automatically

4.1 Report request methods

You can run report requests using various request methods. They are listed below:

RWCLI60 command line enables you to run a report request from the command line prompt. RWCLI60 is an executable that parses and transfers the command line to the specified Reports Server. It uses a command line similar to the Reports Runtime executable (RWRUN60). An RWCLI60 command line request is made using a non-Web architecture. A typical command line request looks like the following: RWCLI60 REPORT=my_report.rdf USERID=username/password@my_db SERVER=repserver DESTYPE=HTML DESFORMAT=cache

See Appendix A, "RWCLI60 Command Line Arguments" for a list of valid RWCLI60 command line...

Click Start Type Task and then click Task Scheduler

Once the Task Scheduler is open, you can create a custom task by clicking Create Basic Task. This action starts a wizard that walks you through the process, prompting you with what program you want to execute, as well as how often and what time it should be run.
