Question:

Are there any GUI alternatives to the Ubuntu Software Center with

Fast application loading/Low startup time Fast search Low weight/size Application purchase facility

Solution:1

Yes, there is an alternative to the Ubuntu Software Center named appgrid. It's a very lightweight application center for Ubuntu and it will let you purchase applications too. You can install it in Ubuntu with these following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:appgrid/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install appgrid

It was only a 100KB download for me.

Comparison between appgrid and Ubuntu Software Center:

Feature | appgrid | Ubuntu Software Center -------------------------------------------------------+----------+----------------------- Programming language | Python 3 | Python 2 Warm start to home screen | 2.7s | 20s Warm start to details screen (eg opening an...

This Waterfall argument has been around for awhile and used by the agile thought leaders early on. They too encountered the "reality" of waterfall as a "red alert."

When you start working on a software development project you will quickly discover that the development methodology used will have a major part to play in the speed and quality of the code developed.Since Agile methodology is so widely used it is important that you understand the advantages and disadvantages of agile so you are able to determine whether it is the best fit for your project deliverables.

Agile software development is a conceptual framework for undertaking software engineering projects. Most agile methods attempt to minimize risk by developing software in short timeboxes, called iterations, which typically last one to four weeks. Each iteration is like a miniature software project of its own, and includes all of the tasks necessary to release the mini-increment of new functionality: planning,...

There are a lot of alternatives to Wrike, most of them are cheaper or freemium, (a free version if only a limited number of users work with it). But you also have to think that your business may have some specific needs depending on its size and/or activity that only the features of a paid version will meet. I’ll list a few applications with special features that might meet the needs of your company.

JIRA: This best in class software is designed to make teams more efficient and minimizes employees' efforts to complete everyday tasks. JIRA helps share information, display issues on agile boards with custom workflows, assign members with certain tasks, work with colleagues using joint-editing tools and monitor progress and updates of each task. Main features for Jira are project tracking, issue tracking, reporting, and email notification.

Pricing for Jira starts from $10.00/month

Insightly: Specifically developed to suit the needs of small businesses, this...

I tried a lot of open source software to do exactly what you want, but honestly it was an open source of headache! This kind of processing from stack image dataset until STL export, with a reasonable file size (below 100 MB), seems to require sophisticated algorithms that open source simply do not have, unfortunately. Mimics for me is the best, but ScanIP from Simpleware (like Philippe Young mentioned) is practically as good as Mimics, but I think both have the same price range (subscription of about 4000€/year, please correct me if I am wrong). I still did not tried the Avizo software, but it seems to be an alternative to Materialise and Simpleware, although a little bit less user friendly, though, maybe...

As we near the launch of Microsoft Surface Hub (it was recently pushed to January 2016) many businesses are doing their due diligence by researching alternatives. You may have noticed that there are already several players in the interactive touch screen world. Companies like InFocus, Sharp, Hitachi Solutions and Smart are developing interactive flat panels for business team collaboration. Let’s check out Microsoft Surface Hub and some of the available alternatives.

The Touch Screen

There are many different size panels available for you to choose. Microsoft has developed two size screens: a 55” and a 84” panel. Sharp currently offers three different size panels: 60”, 70” and 80” models. The OneScreen and Mondopad come in multiple sizes as well: 58”, 70”, 84” and 90”, & 57”, 70” and 84”respectively.

The Built In Computer

Microsoft will release its smaller Surface Hub with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and a scaled down version of Windows 10...

Our smartphones, PCs and all the smart devices that we own can become really dumb really soon without an internet connection. That’s why the ability to share internet connection between devices is so important as it ensures that if one of our devices have an internet connection, others can also remain connected. While we have been able to achieve this feat with our mobile devices for a very long time, on Windows the feature was first effectively implemented by a piece of software call Connectify. Over the years Connectify evolved and incorporated many advanced features like File sharing, Bridge, Dispatch, and more. That said, that evolution also brought along a fair share of problems.

Why we need a Connectify alternative?

While Connectify is a very good piece of software, one of the biggest challenges when it comes to using this piece of software is pricing. I understand that Connectify provides a free lite version of the app, however, the Lite version is severely...

After I destroyed what credibility I had left with the Open Source community last week, gushing over Office 2010 and, in particular, OneNote, a Mac user emailed me and asked if I knew of any cross-platform tools that were similar to OneNote. I figured it was worth taking a step back from my love of OneNote and poking around to see what I could find.

As it turns out, there are a lot of applications that work well across browsers or in the cloud for taking notes. Although none, in my opinion, work as well or as intuitively as OneNote, all of the applications listed below are either free and/or open source and will do the trick in many settings. In fact, if you're looking for a note-taking App, they're all worth a look. Just because OneNote works best with my little brain, others may find software devoted to mind-mapping or that follows more of a wiki format works better for their particular brains.

OneNote will remain my notetaking/life...

You can now replace the Ubuntu Software Center with something else — something faster. Let me introduce you to App Grid, arguably the best software center alternative.

The introduction of the Ubuntu Software Center back in Ubuntu 9.10 was a very welcome addition as it made searching for software a lot easier and user friendly — there was no longer a need to sift through lots of confusing package names.

While I personally have very few complaints about its design, I do tend to complain about its speed. It’s pretty slow at times, which feels very abnormal when you’re already on a computer with a fast processor and an SSD and all other applications just fly. App Grid is a vast improvement in this regard.

Before We Start

Before I begin, I have to mention that App Grid is a closed-source application. I know that a lot of Linux users use Linux through a conscious decision because they believe in the open-source initiative ...

For the record, I'd stay clear of deep freeze. It was a bear to configure and their licencing model sucks. We had 10 seats of an older version that didn't work with Win7, which was fine because XP was the norm back then. We later bought 12 seats of the new version, at full price, to use with Win7 computers. During the setup process the Admin Console picked up the XP machine using the old Deepfreeze and counted them against our new seats. I called into support, and they simply said "Buy more seats".

You don't do that with any other program, so why do they think that's okay?

Hey Edward, I stopped using Deep Freeze partially for the same reasons you talk about. Their customer support is sometimes abysmal at best, and I found the software isn't all that great (trying to update your computer anyone?)

You should try Horizon Data Sys, they make a few different products (comparison time!) but unlike Deep Freeze and Faronics, I've never had an...

Email is way too noisy, prone to hiding the important stuff, and really becoming unreliable for critical/timely communications. There are better ways to communicate.

Note: This is the third blog post in a

series on email clearinghouses

.

We’ve been talking about how email is way too noisy, prone to hiding the important stuff, and really becoming unreliable for critical/timely communications. But what’s the alternative to email? We certainly have other channels that we can use. On my iPhone right now, here are all the different communication channels on which I could sent a directed message:

When I receive a message notification in my personal life, the channel helps me determine the probable sender and content, and the likely urgency – which determines the order in which I am likely to pay attention:

Phone: The sky must be falling, it’s a conference call that I’m being pulled into, or it’s my mom (to...

Stored cardholder data should be rendered unreadable according to requirement 3 of the PCI Security Audit Procedures document. If encryption, truncation, or another comparable approach cannot be used, encryption options should continue to be investigated as the technology is rapidly evolving. In the interim, while encryption solutions are being investigated, stored data must be strongly protected by compensating controls.

An example of compensating controls for encryption of stored data is complex network segmentation that may include the following:

1. Internal firewalls that specifically protect the database
2. TCP wrappers or firewall on the database to specifically limit who can connect to the database
3. Separation of the corporate internal network on a different network segment from production, Fire walled away from database servers.

As we rapidly approach the 70th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there have been all sorts of articles, tributes, memorials, and so forth expressed both in print and online. I’ve been busy myself with some of this sort of thing. I was asked if I would write up a short piece for Aeon Ideas about whether there were any alternatives to these bombings, and I figure it won’t hurt to cross-post it here as well.

An unusual photograph of the late clouds of Hiroshima, as seen from the air. This was probably taken by aircraft that arrived several hours after the bombing to do damage reconnaissance; they reported the target was obscured by huge amounts of smoke. Source: National Archives and Records Administration, via Fold3.com.

The point of the piece, I would like to emphasize, is not necessarily to “second guess” what was done in 1945. It is, rather, to point out that we tend to constrain our view of the possibilities generally to one of two unpleasant...

Brothers Thomas and John Knoll created Photoshop in 1988. Since then, the application has become the industry’s leader, with the name itself even becoming a verb. How often do you hear someone questioning whether a photograph was photoshopped? Photoshop affected numerous design fields, including print and mobile app design.

Photoshop’s ability to perform jobs (creating UI buttons, photo editing, etc.) became its claim to fame. Sure, the Adobe Suite had many other applications, such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Fireworks, but Photoshop became widely used and celebrated. And why not? The Photoshop software became the gateway to the design industry; its program has a wide set of versatile tools, allowing the process of both editing a photo and creating an interface simultaneously.

Perhaps now the biggest question we face has to do with Photoshop’s relevance. Is Photoshop still the best tool for artists living in 2016 or are there alternatives to Photoshop to do...

Long Path Tool is a shareware program provided by KrojamSoft that, as its name suggests, helps you fix a dozen issues you’ll face when a file’s path is too long. Those issues include not being able to copy, cut, or delete the files in question because its path is too long.

Is Long Path Tool safe?

This program has been in the center of a number of controversies. It has allegations against it ranging from spamming on other sites to putting a file on your computer that you’ll be unable to delete it until you buy a license for their program.

Spamming allegations

There have been a number of reports from users that the owners of Long Path Tool have been spamming their sites and promoting their own tool. Some complaints have surfaced on MyWOT (A site that checks the safety and integrity of websites). A user by the name Victorspin has commented, “These clowns have an ongoing campaign spamming a software website. *Update*: a year later and we’re still getting...

Windows 8 (and now 10) no longer comes with Windows Media Center by default. To get it, you can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro and purchase the Media Center Pack. And Windows 10 doesn’t have it at all.

If you’re using Windows 8 or 10 and don’t want to buy two separate upgrades just to use a program that once came standard with Windows, you can try one of these alternative media center applications for your HTPC.

Modern Apps

Modern apps deserve an honorable mention. Apps for Netflix, Hulu, and other media services look awfully similar to media center interfaces. If you want an interface to play back streaming video from your couch, these modern apps may be a convenient alternative to a new media center application.

Kodi (Formerly XBMC)

Kodi is probably the most popular alternative to Windows media Center out there. Kodi was formerly known as XBMC, and was was originally created for modded Xboxes. Today, Kodi runs on a variety of...

SCCM is a tool for OS Deployment, Software deployment, Hardware/Software Inventory, Software (primarily windows) Updates. SCCM Definitely has some quirks, but is VERY good at it's job. What will eventually happen is that something will click and you'll finally "Get It" and things will become much easier. I would recommend sticking with it a bit longer.

SCOM Solves your Operational Monitoring need. In fact there are SCOM MPs from Microsoft (built primarily by the actual product teams for the products they monitor) for all of the software you mentioned.
SCOM does not directly "Aggregate event logs so that there is one central place for monitoring the health of an organization" as this is inefficient and unnecessary, you will write rules and monitors that perform the necessary monitoring without simply collecting everything first.

I would strongly recommend finding a System Center User group in your area. These groups are invaluable sources of contacts that know...

Over the past few weeks, the fate of Ubuntu's Software Center has received a lot of press. There have been ample ravings about how the Software Center is about to vanish from the face of the Earth. In reality, it's not going anywhere yet. What is changing, however, will be the ability to submit new applications or updates to existing applications. In this article, I'll explain what this means and where things will likely go from here.

The Software Center Alternatives

Unless you purchased software from the Ubuntu Software Center, you're not likely going to be affected. I also believe that even though the Software Center's development has been suspended, the basic maintenance support to keep it "working" will continue. And even though some Ubuntu flavors have done away with the software center completely, they do so with alternatives in mind.

It's worth noting that even if the software was to disappear completely one day, there are ample alternatives already in...

During the shift from Windows 7 to Windows 8, there were lots of things that changed – not only its design but lots of other things too! More prominently, in latest version, Microsoft removed some other elements, which did actually come built-in with Windows 7. Although it was good in some aspects, we lost an ultra-useful tool — Windows Media Center.

Windows Media Center, often called WMC, was a media hub for your PC, letting you watch movie & music files from various sources such as files and DVDs for example, record TV etc. All these tasks are interconnected in a way that you can access it in any other Windows-based device in your home network.

Quite sadly, Windows Media Center has been discontinued; you need to look for some alternatives be it Windows 8 or Windows 10. Likewise, if you are using Linux or Macintosh and want a Windows Media Center-like solution to use as a media hub, you too need to check out alternatives.

In this post, we’ve created a list of...

Ninite Installer is a program that allows users to download and install all of their commonly-used programs all in one neat package. For some users, though, Ninite may not provide all the needed programs, so there are a number of alternatives available.

1) Allmyapps

Allmyapps is a program similar to Ninite that allows users to download and manage all of their application from one site.

Advantages: The program allows users to download, update and manage all of their applications in one location. It also allows users to back up their downloaded applications by creating a free account. This is an invaluable tool for the users who may suffer hardware crashes.

Disadvantages: Some of the programs are not kept up to date, but this isn’t a problem for the programs that come packaged with auto-updaters.
